24-Hour Songwriting Competition

On September 19th, 2010, cARTel had one of their most exciting one day events yet with their Back To School themed Song Fight: The 24 Hour Songwriting Competition. Held at the Airliner in Downtown LA, the evening featured live music, a bake sale, an art gallery, live art creation and more.

The night before the event, 7 local bands bands received three limitations: a school subject, a lyric, written by our ensemble members as "homework" and some kind of musical device. They then had 24 hours to write a brand new song, incorporating all these elements. The result? A lively, ridiculously fun evening that brought together musicians, artists, fans, & friends. We drank, we ate, we performed, we danced, we created art, we bought art, and most importantly, we voted on our favorite song of the evening.

Winners: The Trees

The winner was The Trees, who brought the house down with their catchy, energetic tune. First prize was a photo session with famed rock and roll photographer Kim Gottlieb Walker, whose shot the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, Pink Floyd, Tom Waits and more and has a photo book on Bob Marley out in October, 2010, as well as one of her prints and a set to close the evening. In true cARTel fashion, the top three bands of the evening (along with The Trees - The Time Police & Sean Pawling Group) took to the stage together for one massive jam session.
