cARTel asks you to collaborate with us on our latest project: Based on a True Story.
We believe that artistic inspiration can come from anywhere. We believe that a thriving community of story-tellers and artists helps deepen understanding and foster compassion.
Every week, we'll present a short simple story, grabbed from a stranger on a street. Then we'll all join together to explore this story from every possible angle through every possible medium.
We want you to watch a short video and let your mind play. Create a piece of art (an image, a song, a poem, a dance, anything) using any aspect of the video as your jumping-off point (a character in the story, a word, a theme, a moment, the storyteller themselves, anything), and send it to us.
We'll amass a library of art stemming from a single story. We'll watch as different artistic minds explore the same source document through their own unique lenses. We'll put dance in dialogue with spoken word and film in dialogue with sculpture. We'll take two minutes of a stranger's time and build a gallery out of it. Join in. Create.
How to Submit
E-mail us at basedonatruestory@wearecartel.org! Just make sure to include your piece (or a link to it), and tell us which video you've based your piece on and how you would like to be credited (if at all).
If you're sending us still visual art, feel free to send it to us in any of the following file formats: .jpg, .gif, .png, or .psd. The higher the resolution, the better. Or, if you'd like, you can upload your piece to another website, such as flickr, and send us a link to it.
If you're sending us video, we would prefer an upload to youtube, merely for the sake of uniformity. Just send us a link to your piece.
If you're sending us audio, please send it to us as an .mp3 file. We promise we won't share it... Actually, that's a lie. We totally will.
Finally, if you're uploading your video to flickr or youtube, please please PLEASE do include a link back to this page (http://wearecartel.org/basedonatruestory.php) in the description, or in the margins or in the piece itself. This whole project is about creating and sharing art; your linking back to us can share the your viewers can discover similar art; this entire project is about sharing art, so it would be great if we could Great!
You are welcome to submit more than one work for a given story, and you are welcome to submit for stories from weeks past, but please only submit original works created in the spirit of the project.
